Gail T. Smith is an attorney and founder of Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers, which is now a program of Cabrini Green Legal Aid. She was named a White House Champion of Change in 2013 for her advocacy on behalf of the children of incarcerated parents. They will discuss : Rate of women's incarceration in the US, Mother-child separation, its impact, and the tragedy of parental rights termination, the foster care to prison pipeline, the struggle to end the shackling of pregnant women, criminalization of battered women and women who have survived childhood abuse, the struggle to end mass incarceration of women and the effectiveness of community sentencing programs that preserve the mother-child bond and provide services that are gender-specific and trauma informed and what people can do to support change.
